Suffolk Veterans Cemetery to receive more than $2 million in federal fundingThe Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk will receive more than $2 million in federal money to help it expand. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine made the announcement Friday. The Department of Veterans Affairs grant will help develop about 5 acres of the cemetery by funding construction of 1,260 cremains gravesites, 1,920 columbarium niches, landscaping and supporting infrastructure. “Those who have served our country deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and honor,” the senators said in a news release. “We welcome these federal dollars coming to Suffolk, which will make it possible for veterans in Hampton Roads to be interred in a cemetery closer to home and their loved ones.” Hampton National Cemetery, the closest national veterans cemetery in the area, is closed to new interments. The closest veterans cemetery with available gravesites is Virginia Veterans Cemetery, which is nearly 100 miles away in Amelia. pilotonline.com/news/local/suffolk-veterans-cemetery-to-receive-more-than-million-in-federal/article_fa378518-7cb6-5c34-8236-4ee16d587c5c.html
