Bidding war breaks out for a chance at $2.5 billion FBI headquartersIn the run-up to a final decision on where to build a new FBI headquarters, Govs. Terry McAuliffe and Larry Hogan have engaged in a high-stakes bidding war aimed at persuading federal officials to relocate the FBI’s 11,000 jobs to their states, raising the costs on a prize that both men view as a cornerstone of their economic agendas. In Virginia, McAuliffe offered an estimated $120 million toward improvements in Springfield, plus land capable of accommodating federal facilities that need to be relocated from the Springfield site. In Maryland, Hogan has committed to providing $317 million in state and local funds for road, transit and infrastructure improvements should the federal government build the project in Greenbelt, or $255 million should it build it in Landover. For more than a decade, the FBI has been pushing for a new headquarters to replace the dated and crumbling J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown Washington.
