Waterways in three cities still not safe after Lauderdale sewage spillWaterways in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors and parts of Oakland Park are still not safe enough for swimming or water sports after a sewage spill this week, officials said Saturday. After two water main breaks Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, test results Saturday showed unacceptable levels of fecal bacteria in the affected waterways. Officials said swimming, fishing, jet-skiing, boating and other water activities should be avoided in areas bound to the north by Northwest/Northeast 38th Street, to the south by Interstate 595/Port Everglades and to the east by the Intracoastal Waterway. The city will have to consult with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before lifting the advisory. Fort Lauderdale beach is not affected and ocean waters were tested and deemed safe, officials said. Other restrictions that remain in place include the closure of George English Lake and Himmarshee Canal along with public boat launches in Fort Lauderdale. Those include boat ramps at Cox's Landing, George English Park, Cooley's Landing and Riverland Woods Park.
