Ex-Legislator Cashes In On State Pension, After 5 Years As $108,000 Political AppointeeMembers of the General Assembly are lucky to be among the few part-time state employees who are given full pension credit for each year they serve — although it isn't really luck, since they're the ones who pass the retirement laws — and this can pay off for them big-time when they retire. It just paid off for former Democratic state Rep. Jessie Stratton. Stratton served 14 years in the House, rising to co-chairwoman of the environment committee, but her pay as a state representative was never higher than $38,422, so any state pension she could have expected at retirement age would have been meager — only a few thousand bucks a year. But then in 2011, after losing the 2002 election and spending eight years outside government, Stratton received a $108,000-a-year political appointment at the state's environmental agency in the newly inaugurated administration of her fellow Democrat, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. And now, five years later, she has retired from that job at age 69 with an estimated pension of $32,000 a year for life, starting next month.
