HARTFORD — After logging 400,000 to 500,000 miles each, the oldest buses in CTTransit's fleet are scheduled for a trip to the scrap yard next year as 125 fresh replacements begin hitting the roads. Connecticut recently signed a contract to buy up to 485 buses over the next five years from New Flyer Industries, a manufacturer based in Canada. Passengers can expect a smoother ride, since more than a decade of daily service on urban streets has worn down the oldest buses in the current fleet. "Riders will get a newer, updated version of what we have now. The buses will have cleaner emissions because of technology changes since the old ones were built in 2001, 2002 and 2003," said Michael Sanders, transit administrator for the state transportation department.
