Longtime former state Rep. Bobby Moak has been elected chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party.
Moak, 57, an attorney from Bogue Chitto, replaces Rickey Cole, who had announced in the spring that he would not seek another term as chairman. Other officers elected at the party's Saturday executive committee meeting include state Rep. Earle Banks as vice chairman, Ruby Funchess as secretary and Ryan Brown as treasurer.
"These party leaders have demonstrated true dedication to our party, and we look forward to a new chapter of growth and strength under their leadership," party spokeswoman Ouida Meruvia said in a statement.
Moak served 32 years in the state House District 53 for Lincoln, Lawrence and Pike counties. He was defeated in November by Republican Vince Mangold as the GOP took a supermajority in the House for the first time in recent history. Moak since 2012 had served as House minority leader, after Republicans in 2011 won a majority of that chamber for the first time since Reconstruction. Previously, Moak had served as chairman of the House Gaming Committee and been a top lieutenant under former Democratic Speaker Billy McCoy.
