Eastpointe community rallies against state-appointed CEO for schoolsA defiant group of school, city, county and state officials stood unified in front of East Detroit High School on Monday, determined to prevent a state-appointed CEO from taking over the academics in four of the district’s seven school buildings. The city of Eastpointe and the East Detroit Public Schools district also announced a joint resolution to the state of Michigan opposing the state takeover. The four schools, Bellview Elementary, Pleasantville Elementary, Kelly Middle School and East Detroit High School were all targeted due to their rank in the bottom five percent of schools academically in the state. They were identified as Priority Schools by the state of Michigan. The district will retain control of two elementary schools and one alternative school. East Detroit Schools filed a lawsuit in May in Macomb County Circuit Court and obtained a temporary restraining order to prevent the State School Reform/Redesign Office from appointing a CEO. The case has since been sent to the state Court of Claims, and the temporary restraining order expired June 13. The district is seeking another injunction.
