WASHINGTON — Indiana is getting $5.8 million in federal grants to help disadvantaged workers land technology-related jobs, the White House announced Monday. Ivy Tech Community College will use $2.6 million to train 330 disadvantaged youths and young adults for jobs in the information technology and advanced manufacturing fields. A $3.2 million project led by the AFL-CIO Labor Institute for Training will help 400 Hoosiers with limited English proficiency improve their language and advanced manufacturing technical skills. “There’s a desperate need for these tech jobs,” Vice President Joe Biden said. The Obama administration in March designated Indianapolis a TechHire community through a national initiative to train low-skilled workers for higher-paying technology jobs.
