Wisconsin could get up to $13 million to combat its growing opioid and heroin epidemic as part of a $1.1 billion plan proposed by President Barack Obama. The state would be able to use the money to expand access to treatment programs for opioid addiction, federal and local officials said in a conference call Tuesday. "This is a critical issue not just for the people of Milwaukee and Wisconsin, but for the people of our nation," said Michael Botticelli, director of National Drug Control Policy. "All of us are united in our efforts to ending this epidemic affecting communities all across the country." At least 78 people died in the United States each day in 2014 — including more than 600 in Wisconsin — due to overdoses linked to drugs like heroin, fentanyl and prescription painkillers, he said.
