Hoping for a new option in epilepsy fight, UNMC will undertake state's first study of marijuana-based medicine
LINCOLN — Debilitating epilepsy has filled Broc Bartenhagen’s young life with numbers he can’t comprehend.
Start with 20, which is about how many different prescription drugs the 14-year-old Gretna boy has tried to combat the unrelenting seizures that have left him with the mental capacity of a toddler.
Or four, which is the number of brain surgeries he has undergone.
But he still endures almost 30 seizures every day.
Now Mike Bartenhagen, the boy’s father, hopes his son soon will be chosen as one of 25 for the first study of its kind to test a marijuana-based medicine in Nebraska.
