About 33,000 Nebraskans older than 65 have Alzheimer's disease or dementia -- 28,000 of them older than 75. In nine years, that number is expected to climb to 40,000. Nine counties in Nebraska are in the top 50 nationally of those that have the highest percentages of people older than 85. Because of the growing numbers, a recent state law (LB320) gave rise to a state plan for people living with Alzheimer's and dementia. That plan was released Tuesday, six months early, and was to be presented to Gov. Pete Ricketts. The bill provides for the state to prepare for significant growth in the needs of people with dementia and disabilities, both of which require costly, long-term care. The state should also improve access to services and supports, and public awareness of those services, the bill says.
