BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech students will have higher tuition next year, but in-state students will see a slightly smaller increase than the university originally proposed. Tuition and mandatory fees will rise 2.9 percent, or $378 a year, for in-state students to $13,230, and will rise 3.5 percent, or $1,039 a year, for a total cost of $31,014 for out-of-state students. The rise for in-state students is slightly lower than an initial proposal, which also called for a 3.5 percent increase. Ultimately, the board approved the lower rate — representing about $100 less per in-state student than the 3.5 percent — as a way of showing how efficiently the university can be run, according to members at the meeting.
