A Progressive Perspective: Some observations on the impeachment hearings
There seems to be a consensus among the pundits that the GOP-controlled Senate will not vote to convict President Trump who was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House for abusing his office and obstructing Congress.
The majority of Republicans will defend the President as acting properly. A few may acknowledge that withholding military aid in exchange for an investigation into the family of a political rival, Joe Biden, was a mistake and inappropriate, but it doesn’t rise to an impeachable offense.
While I do not believe there will be a wholesale defection of Republicans in the Senate, I do hope that one or two (perhaps Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins or Ben Sasse) will rise above ideological rhetoric and partisan interests and, and at least stand-up and publicly condemn President Trump for the manner in which he dealt with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is imperative, for the good of our democracy, that it is made abundantly clear to future Presidents that soliciting the aid of foreign governments to help him/her in their own political campaign is as Speaker Nancy Pelosi said an “abuse of power which undermines our national security and jeopardizes the integrity undermines the integrity of our elections” and will not be tolerated.
There is, no doubt, that President Trump attempted to extort a political favor from President Zelensky. It was as Bob Woodward of Watergate fame said, “mind-boggling and clearly a misuse of presidential power.”
