The Department of Education has canceled all high school sports for the rest of the semester — effective today, February 8, 2016, says Department of Education Director, Vaitinasa Salu Hunkin Finau. The email was sent out to notify ASHSAA and principals of the public and private schools last week Tuesday. The DOE Director explained in her email that at the beginning of this school year DOE had 15 operable buses with which to transport private and public school students throughout the island. “We now have 13 operable buses, the lead manager of the mechanics has just resigned, and ASG is trying to pay up all the OT for the bus drivers accumulated from first semester sports competitions. “The main mission of DOE transportation is to ensure students who live beyond the one-mile radius requirement are transported to and from school,” she noted. However, she said in light of these factors, and the depletion of local funding, DOE leadership informed the president of ASHSAA, Elvis Liufau that sports would be canceled after some schools opted not to be responsible for community transportation for their children because of safety issues.
