Mark Dayton backs legislative agenda to address racial gaps Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton on Thursday endorsed proposals from black community groups to try to reduce the state’s racial disparities. Minnesota has long faced large gaps between the academic and economic achievements of minority residents and those of white residents. In a statement, Dayton said he hoped Minnesotans of color would be the “driving force in deciding how to best address these challenges.” The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party governor has proposed $100 million in new spending in his supplemental budget to begin tackling the issue. On Wednesday, a coalition of community groups put forward the United Black Legislative Agenda, a series of initiatives and reforms aimed at racial disparities. Ideas include criminal justice reforms, help for working families and $75 million in new funding to support black-owned businesses.
