In the South, for some, religion is a way of life. Each week, thousands gather at their chosen places of worship and bow their heads in prayer. For a group of Mississippians, their reverence occurs not in churches or synagogues but in mosques around the state. Approximately 5,000 Muslims live in Mississippi, according to data collected from the 2010 census by the U.S. Religion Census. Those who practice the Islamic faith are doctors and lawyers, mothers and fathers, and active members of the community with a love of God and country just like their neighbors of different beliefs, said Emad Al-Turk with the International Museum of Muslim Cultures.
