PROVIDENCE — A Department of Children, Youth and Families official who was placed on unexplained paid leave seven months ago was allowed to return to work this month. Brian P. Peterson, the associate director of financial management at the DCYF who was acting as the deputy superintendent of the state Training School where judges send delinquent youth, returned April 18. He is working under the same financial title but has been assigned to the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. He is no longer associated with the Training School, according to Department of Administration spokeswoman Brenna McCabe. It remains unclear why Peterson was placed on paid administrative leave in mid-September 2015 and why he's been cleared to return. McCabe said Peterson, who will retain his $134,926 annual salary, returned "following the completion of an internal investigation." She would not say why any actions were taken, citing DOA's policy to "not comment on the nature of personnel investigations or ongoing personnel matters." Referencing that same policy, she said she could not answer whether Peterson had an administrative hearing or requested one.
