Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is campaigning for president as a man of unbending principles, and during his appearance at Gateway High School Saturday morning he stuck to his guns: attacking Republican front-runner Donald J. Trump, the media and transgender people's access to public restrooms. About the only thing he seemed willing to compromise on was saying “God bless the Steelers” — an utterance he maintained was “profoundly painful for someone who grew up as a fan of the Houston Oilers.” The appearance, Mr. Cruz's first in the region, filled an auditorium with nearly 1,000 enthusiastic supporters, who gave a standing ovation to Mr. Cruz's stump-speech pledge to abolish the IRS. They responded almost as warmly to pledges to protect gun rights and repeal President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul. Mr. Cruz also exploited a fresher line of attack, noting Mr. Trump's recent criticism of a North Carolina law requiring transgender people to use the restroom of the gender listed on their birth certificate. Mr. Cruz likened such criticism to “adult grown men, strangers, [being] allowed in the bathroom with little girls.
