Roanoke council candidates say city's redevelopment successes have not been inclusiveHis presence on the stage of Roanoke politics this year was fleeting, a few-weeks-long independent run for city council that ended with his choosing not to submit paperwork to get on the ballot. But during that brief stay, Price, who runs a nonprofit after-school community center on 11th Street Northwest, introduced an idea rarely heard amid the hoorahs of recent civic successes. Not everyone is lifted by things like greenways, restaurants downtown and the craft beer scene. “The greenway is pretty, but go out there at night time. There’s people sleeping out there,” Price said at the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce forum in February. “That’s what we need to address. We need more balance.” Remaining candidates agreed with Price’s point in subsequent interviews. While the city has made great strides culturally and has borne recent economic fruit, some Roanokers feel detached , even left behind.
