Conservative activists: Gay 'conversion therapy' bill goes too farA Senate committee this week will vote on a bill to ban "conversion therapy" for minors, a widely discredited practice that purports to "fix" homosexuality. To those who support the measure, it's about protecting children and parents from abusive and fraudulent practices. But opponents say it could infringe on religious freedom and parental rights. The debate comes at a time when "religious liberty" laws have passed in several states, pitting gay-rights advocates against religious conservatives. House Bill 1661 already passed the House on a 229-99 roll-call vote. Rep. Eric Schleien, R-Hudson, agreed to sponsor the bill after a gay friend asked him to look into conversion, or "reparative," therapy.
