Methodists are coming to Portland to talk homosexuality, reconciliation with Native AmericansThousands of United Methodists will descend on Portland in the coming days to hash out key church issues, such as policies on gay clergy, during a 10-day conference at the Oregon Convention Center. The United Methodist Church is a global Christian denomination with 12.3 million members as of 2014. It's a mainline church, which means it predates and differs from the evangelical movement. Like other mainline groups, The United Methodist Church is shrinking in the United States. But it's growing abroad, particularly in Africa and the Philippines. Let's work through a few questions that might be of interest to non-Methodists. If you're only interested in how the crowd might affect you, skip to the last question. What exactly happens at the conference?The General Conference, which is held every four years, is where United Methodists change doctrine, make major financial decisions and assess church-wide initiatives.
