DONNA — Voters rejected the request for a $22 million bond Saturday with several citing political battles and a lack of trust toward the Donna Independent School District Board of Trustees. “I feel like in the right hands this money would be very beneficial for our area,” said voter Lillian Jimenez, 29. “But the people who are going to be receiving this money, it’s not the right hands.” The bond failed with 1,450 votes, about 63 percent, against it and was intended to build a new middle school to replace the decaying W.A. Todd Middle School. The new building with capacity for 1,200 students would have been located on 40 acres behind Donna North High School and was to be completed by fall 2018. The board of trustees approved the bond in January, as officials stated this was the perfect opportunity to build the school at low cost to the district because a state program that could pay for up to 78 percent of the bond debt.
