Former billing clerk pleads guilty to stealing $871K from Virginia Physicians for WomenA former billing specialist for Virginia Physicians for Women pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzling $871,869 from the medical practice over five years, money she told police was partially used to assist two of her children with their college expenses. Edith W. Harris, 52, committed 2,687 separate acts of embezzlement from Virginia Physicians for Women, a well-known obstetrics and gynecology practice with seven local offices, 28 physicians, a staff of 125 and a cash flow of $24 million annually, Chesterfield prosecutor Robert J. Fierro Jr. told the court. “She was in a unique position ... and was able to cover and hide” the theft, Fierro said. “She was able to continue this scheme for a significant period of time.” Harris diverted the funds to credit cards and bank accounts held by her and family members from July 2010 through June 2015, Fierro said. Her children received some of the money but were not accomplices to the theft and were unaware of their mother’s actions, Fierro said.
