Virginia Intermont marks two years since closing, still trying to resolve financial issuesBRISTOL, Va. — Scant rays of scattered sunshine pierced the metaphorically dark clouds hanging above the Virginia Intermont campus last Thursday, as a forebodingly chilly breeze made May feel more like March. It has been a gloomy two years since the former private, liberal arts school ushered its final graduating class across the stage of Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall. Now, Harrison-Jones and VI’s other staid brick buildings stand as silent sentry to the once teeming campus. VI ceased operating in May 2014 after overwhelming debt, declining enrollment and insufficient revenues claimed its academic accreditation and ultimately snuffed out its torchlight. It has been 735 days since that warm, sunny Sunday afternoon when 105 cap-and-gown-clad graduates accepted their diplomas, celebrated with their families and left the Moore Street campus in their rear view mirrors.
