Duke Energy to construct $55M power facility on Duke University campusDURHAM — Duke Energy has announced plans to construct a 21-megawatt power facility on Duke University’s campus, which would use waste heat from generating electricity to produce thermal energy and steam. The facility — a natural gas combined heat and power plant — is subject to approval by the North Carolina Utilities Commission under a 35-year agreement and is estimated to cost $55 million. If approved, the plant is expected to start operations in 2018. “The project will be put in Duke Energy’s rates, so Duke Energy will pick up the entire $55 million and we will treat it like any other power plant that we have,” said Duke Energy spokesperson Randy Wheeless. Wheeless said that since the plant ties into an existing substation on Duke’s campus, the facility could be used for other things nearby, but that all the power will most likely be used by the university. The project should provide jobs and it does serve a useful purpose. Considering the negative economic effects caused by HB2 it seems like this is a reasonable project to undertake.
