Does a state legislator really want the state of Mississippi to take over the city of Jackson? It's unclear, but Gov. Phil Bryant has a message for the lawmaker who dreamed up the proposal. "Under no circumstances would Gov. Bryant sign legislation granting him and future governors authority to take over the city of Jackson or any other municipality in Mississippi," said his spokesperson, Clay Chandler. Rep. Mark Baker, R-Brandon, the chairman of the Mississippi Legislature's House Judiciary Committee, says he is planning to write a bill that would create a type of conservatorship to gain control of Jackson, just as the state would over a school district, WAPT reported. This comes on the heels of a law Gov. Phil Bryant signed to change the leadership of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport to include appointees from the state and bordering counties.
