MONTGOMERY — Members of the Alabama State Board of Education on Thursday questioned and pushed back against four-year-old legislation that requires public schools to be assigned an A through F letter grade. Board member Jeff Newman, who represents the Shoals, Lawrence County and part of Limestone County, said no one has explained to him why assigning each school a grade is necessary. “I’ve missed the point in this A through F (grading),” he said. “What’s it ultimately going to be used for?” Newman is a former Lamar County superintendent. Interim State Superintendent Philip Cleveland, who has being working on a grading formula for more than a month, told board members the new measurement stick is state law. He later said the grades should be made public by the end of the year.
