Oxford City Council declines to take up revised bathroom ordinanceOXFORD — There was no appetite Thursday among city leaders for a revised ordinance aimed at enhancing penalties for criminal acts in bathrooms. The ordinance, which Councilwoman Charlotte Hubbard proposed last week, would have levied further punishment on those already illegal acts: a $500 fine or six months’ jail time for harassment, disorderly conduct, or assault of any kind in a public bathroom. Hubbard drafted the ordinance after the council recalled an ordinance that restricted bathroom access according to the sex displayed on an individual’s birth certificate. That ordinance was roundly criticized by civil rights groups as discriminatory against transgender people.
