Dowling College, a 48-year-old private liberal arts college in Long Island, N.Y., is closing on Friday. Struggling with sinking enrollment and rising debt, the school, notes Inside Higher Ed, is the “poster child for the nation’s struggling private colleges.”
The college’s president, Albert Inserra, in statement published in Newsday, noted, “As painful as this announcement is, we want the student body, faculty and alumni to know that we made every effort to form a suitable academic affiliation so that we could keep the college open.”
Multiple reports note that the school — which offered undergraduate, graduate, MBA, criminal justice and aviation programs and more to some 2,400 students — had been struggling for years, and enrollment had been plummeting. It had also changed presidents seven times in about 12 years, with Inserra hired in August, 2014, according to Newsday.
Dowling’s website mentions only that the summer sessions have been canceled. The main number was not answered despite numerous calls made by USA TODAY College.
