Civil War Trust asks donors to save five Virginia battlefieldsFive Civil War battlefields in Virginia will benefit this summer if donors embrace an opportunity now up for grabs, the Civil War Trust announced Tuesday. The national nonprofit is asking people to chip in so it can leverage grants and special funds to save 313 acres that figured importantly in the battles of Williamsburg, Gaines’ Mill, Ream’s Station, White Oak Road and Sailor’s Creek. Each fight racked up high casualty counts. The battles span nearly three years of the war in Virginia, which saw more bloodshed than any other state. To buy the land, the trust has stitched together a combination of federal and state grants and National Park Service funds targeted for land acquisition.
