Family of slain Savannah State University student sues Georgia Board of RegentsThe parents of a 22-year-old Savannah State University student who was shot and killed on campus last year have filed suit against the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents. Sharron and Willie Starks allege negligence and lack of security were contributing factors in the August slaying of their son, Christopher Starks, and are asking for a jury trial in addition to reparations. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Chatham County State Court, was preceded by a Jan. 15 letter to the University System in which an attorney for the family said the Regents were responsible for oversight of security at Savannah State, a campus that was victimized by shootings, rapes and a homicide before Starks was killed. Tuesday’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, but the January letter said wrongful death claims could be in excess of $1 million.
