State offices, including Calhoun County administrative offices and courts, will be closed Monday in observance of Confederate President Jefferson Davis’ birthday. Anniston, Oxford and Jacksonville government offices will remain open. The holiday is observed on the first Monday in June and became an official state holiday in December 1900, according to state archives officials. Before serving as the president of the Confederate States of America, Davis held many political roles, serving in both houses of Congress and as Secretary of War, according to his biography on the First White House’s website. The First White House was Davis’ residence in Montgomery when he was president. “He was active in politics most of his adult life, which made him a natural choice for the president of the Confederacy,” Jennifer Gross, associate professor of history at Jacksonville State University and author of several books on the Civil War, said.
