State official hands down recommendations in city, union wage battleA state official handed down three recommendations regarding the wage war between the city of Mitchell and approximately 75 city employees. James E. Marsh, director of the Division of Labor and Management within the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, sided with the city on two of three issues pertaining to contract negotiations between the city and its American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 2922 employees Friday. The union hoped to raise wages for hourly workers by 4 percent effective Jan. 1, 2016 on the grounds that comparably-sized cities and neighboring counties in South Dakota have given larger raises than those on the table for AFSCME Local 2922. But the city proposed a 2 percent increase. After taking into consideration comments from representatives of both the city and union, Marsh recommended the 2 percent raise.
