Slightly more than 3 years ago, Mohamad Tanbal decided it was time to take his family and get out of Syria, then two years into internal fighting that continues today and has displaced millions of Syrians. More than two years later, Tanbal, his wife and three children were living in a modest rental home in Bloomfield Township after first settling in Turkey and then applying for refugee status that eventually brought them to the United States. “We were scared,” Tanbal, then 45, told the International Business Times through an Arabic translator in a December interview that chronicled their journey and resettlement in Michigan.
