Fata victim attorney asks judge to restrict insurance companies from seeking repayment from victimsThe attorney for victims of an Oakland Township oncologist convicted of fraud after ordering unnecessary cancer treatment for more than 500 patients is fighting against portions of a government reimbursement plan set up by a federal judge. Farid Fata, 50, is serving 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to 13 counts of health care fraud. The sentence in U.S. District Court in Detroit was handed down after a hearing that included disturbing stories from Fata’s former patients regarding pain they or their loved ones endured due to mistreatment. Fata made millions of dollars paid by insurance companies after ordering chemotherapy and other unnecessary treatments for patients, many of whom suffered organ damage, lost teeth, have nerve damage and lost bone in sinus cavities, among other ailments. Jules Olsman, a Berkely-based attorney representing the estate of John Korff — who died after treatment by Farid Fata — recently filed a petition in federal court asking U.. District Judge Paul Borman to restrict healthcare insurance entities such as Medicare and others from seeking payment directly from Fata’s victims.
