Lawsuit filed by Wilder, promoter against Povetkin for $5 millionDeontay Wilder’s camp entered negotiations with Alexander Povetkin suspicious of the Russian heavyweight boxer’s potential involvement with performance enhancing drugs. Those suspicions heightened when it learned that Povetkin had traveled to Spain, a country known for doping activity in the sporting world, in late March. Team Wilder’s concerns of Povetkin’s suspected doping and a detailed account of the back-and-forth, sometimes contentious, negotiations between the two sides that led to the World Boxing Council stepping in to mandate random drug testing by VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) came to light this week in a lawsuit filed by Wilder and his promoter Lou DiBella Entertainment against Povetkin and his promoter World of Boxing. The lawsuit, filed in United States Court Southern District of New York on June 13, seeks more than $5 million in damages, including Wilder’s purse of $4.36 million being held in an escrow account pursuant to the contractual fight agreement. The claim paints a laborious contract negotiations process with the two sides failing to agree on several key terms, including how drug testing would be conducted.
