LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill Thursday that would have required car repair shops to use parts manufactured by the original equipment manufacturers instead of aftermarket parts. While Snyder said the bill has many provisions to update the state’s Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act that he supports, the limit on aftermarket parts when making certain repairs to vehicles that are less than six years old would harm the aftermarket industry in the state. “As Michigan continues its comeback and continues to be a leader in promoting new technology in the automotive industry, it is imperative that we ensure all components of that industry can remain strong, including Michigan’s robust aftermarket parts industry,” he said in his veto letter. “On its face, this policy seems to be intended to protect consumers and ensure vehicles are safely repaired. That is a laudable goal. However, this bill limits use of safe, high-quality aftermarket parts designed specifically for particular vehicles.” State Rep. Peter Pettalia, R-Presque Isle, who owns an auto repair business, said the provision was meant to ensure that body shops don’t use substandard parts.
