Noem calls for Indian Health Service to 'get out of the hospital business'At an Indian Affairs Committee Hearing on tribal health care on Friday, Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D, called for the Indian Health Service to make an exit from the health care crisis that has been years in the making. "Frankly, I'm just going to put this very simply: I believe that IHS should get out of the hospital business. I think they're terrible at it. I don't think they know what they're doing," Noem said to applause from the audience. "First, as everyone in this room is aware, the medical care that we receive at IHS facilities in the Great Plains region is like getting health care in a Third World country," Noem said. Noem's remarks pose the latest challenge for IHS after a report last year from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services led to the closure of an emergency room in Rosebud.
