The U.S. Supreme Court decision on Texas abortion clinic restrictions won’t have a direct effect in Iowa, but it generated strong emotions on both sides Monday. The leader of an Iowa anti-abortion group called the ruling "devastating" and predicted that it will hurt efforts to restrict abortions here. Meanwhile, a senior official with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland applauded the decision, saying it will protect Iowa women’s constitutional right to safe, legal abortions. In the Texas case, the Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that state regulations on abortion providers constituted an undue burden on a constitutionally protected right to terminate a pregnancy. The justices struck down a Texas law enacted three years ago that required all abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals and all clinics to be equipped with hospital-level surgical centers. Iowa does not have the kind of law enacted in Texas. Proponents of the Texas statute say it would have protected patient safety. Opponents said it was a backdoor way to force many safe abortion clinics to close.
