Wilmington firefighters union, administration close deal on contractThe Wilmington firefighter union and city administration finished bargaining Thursday night over a contract that’s been outstanding since 2012. Union firefighters will receive retroactive benefits from the years they went without a contract. It means more money for them, an adjustment to their healthcare payments and the elimination of differing pay schedules for shifts worked. “This contract represents a fair compromise by the city and (International Association of Fire Fighters) Local 1590 to reach an agreement that satisfies the needs of union members. Firefighters risk their lives to protect and serve the citizens of Wilmington, and their sacrifice should not go unrewarded. I am pleased we were able to offer a salary increase," Mayor Dennis P. Williams said in a statement. Bruce Schweiger, union president, did not immediately return calls for comment.
