Man charged in attempt to obtain gun to shoot Carter County DA Craig Ladd, others
ARDMORE -- A 33-year-old Sulphur man is back behind bars in the Carter County Detention Center facing charges of endeavoring to perform an act of violence against District Attorney Craig Ladd, District Judge Dennis Morris and Associate District Judge Thomas Baldwin.
Court records show Schuyler Stewart was charged Feb. 16 based on allegations that while he was an inmate in the CCDC he asked another inmate to "... furnish him with a firearm to be used to shoot and kill ..." Ladd, Morris and Baldwin.
Stewart, who has a criminal history in both Carter and Murray Counties, had been arrested by Ardmore police in December on an outstanding warrant for failure to comply with the sentence he earned on a 2013 domestic assault and battery conviction. Stewart is accused to seeking the help of another inmate in obtaining the gun, while he was "sitting out" the time ordered to cover costs and fines attached to the older case.
Stewart's plot was uncovered by members of the Carter County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Chris Bryant said late Friday afternoon Stewart was arrested on a warrant obtained last week based on evidence uncovered during an investigation into the allegations. The Sulphur man was taken into custody without incident. He made an initial appearance before Special District Judge Carson Brooks in Carter County District Court Wednesday Bond was set at $100,000. The judge also ordered Stewart to have no contact with any of the three victims named in the case.
