Jon Bon Jovi has played many times for politicians, but last night was perhaps the most poignant performance.
Bon Jovi dedicated “We Weren’t Born to Follow” to former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Jersey-born astronaut Mark Kelly, during the band’s Saturday, March 4 show at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale., AZ.
“He is one of the of the only people in the world who’s been around the world more times than Bon Jovi,” said Jon Bon Jovi, according to a Youtube, while introducing the song. “She is a true American hero. She defines tenacious and her determination exemplifies the spirit of Arizona and America. Her service to our country is nothing short of miraculous and inspiring. Would you please say hello to Commander Mark Kelly and Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.”
The crowd cheered and the band began “We Weren’t Born to Follow.”
Giffords, a Democrat, survived being struck by multiple gunshots during an 2011 Tucson, AZ. attack which killed six people. Kelly is from West Orange and flew combat missions in the Gulf War and spent 340 days in space.
