Republicans Spar With Malloy Over Early-Release Program
Statistics show that crime has declined in Connecticut in recent years, but Republican leaders and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy battled Monday over whether it can be cut even further.
Sen. Len Suzio, a Meriden Republican, called for sharply changing Malloy's program for "risk reduction credits," saying that too many prisoners are getting out and committing more crimes. The credits allow criminals to be released from prison earlier than they would otherwise.
Suzio's bill says that anyone convicted of a violent crime or sexual offense would be ineligible for the credits, which were established in 2011 under Malloy and approved by the Democratic-controlled legislature.
"Gov. Malloy's early-release program for violent offenders has been a failure,'' Suzio said. "Violent felons are getting out of prison early, and they are committing murders, rapes, and other horrible crimes. They are not being reformed, and we have the statistics to prove it. It's a revolving door.''
