The venerable Jeep Cherokee has gone through a number of changes in its 43 years. It started as a rugged two-door companion to the more upscale Wagoneer before being reborn as a trendsetting midsize sport utility vehicle that was as comfortable on the road as it was off. After an 11-year hiatus, the Cherokee came back as a modern car-based crossover that promised Jeep-style adventure with a funky front end. Through it all, the vehicle was built in Toledo. But that long chapter of the city’s history closed at 11:30 p.m. Thursday. In the waning minutes of the day, the last Toledo-built Cherokee rolled off the line at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Toledo Assembly Complex.
