Trump-endorsed Maryland lawmaker seeks to impeach GOP Gov. Larry Hogan
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — A Republican state lawmaker in Maryland, who is also a candidate for governor, filed a resolution on Thursday to impeach term-limited Gov. Larry Hogan, who also is a Republican.
Del. Dan Cox, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, filed the impeachment resolution accusing Hogan of “malfeasance in office,” among several other claims. Cox represents parts of Frederick and Carroll Counties.
In the resolution, Cox also accuses Hogan of “misuse of the police power, violations of the separation of powers, theft of the people’s liberty and property, deprivation of the religious liberties of the people, and abuse of power under false pretense.”
Cox pointed to several COVID-19 related policies that the lawmaker claimed, “restrict certain freedoms.”
“With these actions, Hogan has breached the compact which binds him to the people as their governor,” Cox wrote in the resolution.
The resolution also drums up a headache for the governor; the purchase of COVID-19 test kits from South Korea that sparked criticism from Democrats over the procurement.
The resolution said Hogan awarded “procurement contracts based on political relationships, misspent Marylanders’ tax dollars on unusable COVID-19 test kits, and intentionally misled the legislature and the public on the status of the inadequate test kits.”
The governor has denied any wrongdoing and maintained the test kits were adequate.
Hogan is in his eighth and final term of governor. Since first elected, the GOP governor has soared in popularity, including a Gonzales Poll showing Hogan was pulling 74% approval; pollster Patrick Gonzales said that level of approval made Hogan the most popular governor in Maryland in the past 60 years. Hogan is also just the second Republican ever in Maryland to be re-elected as governor.
In response to the impeachment resolution – which has been sent to committee – Hogan’s spokesperson Mike Ricci quipped back at Cox’s efforts.
“This guy is known to be a QAnon conspiracy theorist,” Ricci said. “He has this weird obsession with the governor. Surprised it took this long.”
QAnon is a conspiracy theory movement that claims former president Trump is waging a battle against the “deep state” that includes powerful government leaders, the media, and others.
