Arizona Republican lawmakers are seeking more control over federal resettlement of refugees in the state, even as new data shows the governor's call to halt the arrival of refugees has been inconsequential. The legislators have introduced bills to study the state's refugee process, to give Arizona greater control over who comes into the state, and to require the licensing of refugee facilities. The measures come amid questions over federal vetting of refugees and fears that terrorists could use the process to enter the U.S. In November, in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks, Gov. Doug Ducey called for halting all refugee resettlements in Arizona even as he acknowledged he did not have the authority to stop them.
