Vice President Joe Biden could play a critical role in the nomination process of the next U.S. Supreme Court justice following the death Saturday of Antonin Scalia, a legal expert said. “He knows the people, he knows the process,” said Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law who tracks judicial vacancies. Biden as U.S. senator from Delaware spent decades in the Senate and chaired the Judiciary Committee. Scalia was found dead on a ranch in Texas Saturday, opening a wave of speculation about his seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, with Republican nominees for president calling for the position to be held open until the next president is elected.
