AZ Democrats wag their fingers at GOP lawmakers over restoring budget cutsAs the Senate this week passed legislation to restore nearly $30 million in cuts made during last year's budget negotiations to high-school career and technical-education programs, Democrats got a chance to wag their fingers (a la Jan Brewer) at Republicans. The cut was made last year as the budget was rushed through, and amid warning from legislative economists that the state was in the red. Democratic lawmakers on the last night of session argued unsuccessfully to restore the funding, warning it would have dramatic impact on a program popular with school districts and the business community. Their warnings fell on deaf ears. During a special legislative session this fall, Democratic lawmakers this fall again pushed to restore funding but Republican leaders kept the brief session focused on a deal to resolve a longstanding lawsuit over school inflation funding. Since then, Republican lawmakers have admitted the cuts were a mistake, and a bipartisan group was quick to introduce a repeal of the cuts at the start of this session.
