Equipping Delaware's police officers with body cameras is a more costly and complicated task than simply buying some equipment – and legislators are grappling with whether the devices are worth the price. The technology has been a topic of national debate after a series of high-profile shootings of unarmed black men by police. Some advocates argue the cameras will help hold police accountable, and some in law enforcement say it will help in gathering evidence. In his proposed budget for next year, Gov. Jack Markell has sought $350,000 to purchase the cameras and some infrastructure. But it's the General Assembly that actually writes the budget and, in hearings from various agencies over the past few days, the Joint Finance Committee's members have been told it may take more than that.
