ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — High school teachers will get a reprieve from a schedule they argue is burdensome now that the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education is supporting a lighter load. On Friday, the board held a special meeting to consider the budget, and nearly every member backed a return to teachers leading classes for five out of seven periods, rather than the current six out of seven. Todd Resch, APS associate superintendent for high school education, said administrators are moving to put the 7/5 schedule in place based on that recommendation, though there is still the “formality” of a board vote on a final budget. The change will cost $4.3 million to adopt, Resch said, with APS having to hire an additional 70 to 80 teachers and staff. The district faces a projected $9.5 million budget shortfall under the 7/5 plan, compared with a $5.2 million shortfall with the status quo.
